Mini has introduced its latest vehicle, the New Mini Cooper S hatchback, to the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 44.90 lakh, with deliveries scheduled to commence in September. This model represents the culmination of a significant evolution in the Hatch’s design history, marking the final iteration of the combustion-engine-powered variant before the introduction of the all-electric version. Retaining the hallmark design principles of its 1959 predecessor, the Cooper S Hatchback is poised to stand as a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The inaugural arrival of the Hatch in its three-door configuration signals a new chapter in Mini’s product lineup, albeit it is important to note that an alternative five-door configuration is also available in the global market. Expectation is for the forthcoming all-electric model, culminating the series of transformations that the Hatch has undergone, to be released later this year.

Mini Cooper S – Exterior Design

The forthcoming Cooper S model builds upon the distinctive design motifs synonymous with the Mini brand, featuring circular headlights without any bezels and an enlarged octagonal front grille. The exterior design is devoid of chrome, while the wheel arches receive a substantial application of plastic cladding. Furthermore, the iconic bulging front and rear fenders maintain their signature stature. The tail lights have undergone a comprehensive redesign, adopting a triangular shape, and are unified by a black plastic band along the tail gate.

The glasshouse remains largely unchanged, with the addition of blacked-out pillars contributing to a sense of elevation within the structure. A significant departure from its predecessor, the vehicle features notably cleaner front and rear bumpers, free from fog lamps or extensive air intakes. Standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, with the option to upgrade to 18-inch units.

Mini Cooper S – Interior

The interior design adopts a highly minimalist aesthetic, which is significantly refined by the omission of the instrument cluster. The air conditioning vents are elegantly incorporated within the dashboard, and the dense collection of physical controls formerly positioned on the central console has been supplanted by a cohesive arrangement of toggle controls.

The standout feature here is undoubtedly the new 9.4-inch round OLED touchscreen, which houses a majority of the car’s settings, including the HVAC controls. It operates on Mini’s latest Android-based operating system, developed in collaboration with Samsung. The Cooper, in its previous iteration, also featured a circular infotainment housing, but its screen was a conventional landscape unit. The interior is adorned with textured surfaces that enhance its unique character. Notably, Mini has chosen to avoid using leather in the interior, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability.

Other notable features include a heads-up display, electrically adjustable front seats, a massage function for the driver’s seat, ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon sound system, advanced connected car technology, six airbags, a Level 1 ADAS suite, and an electronic parking brake.

Mini Cooper S – Powertrain

The platform supporting the new Cooper S is a thoroughly updated version of the previous model. Inside the vehicle, the hatchback retains its 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but has seen an increase in power output from 178hp to 204hp and torque from 280Nm to 300Nm, up from 178hp and 280Nm. This engine is paired exclusively with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which powers the front wheels. Unlike manual transmissions, there are no paddle shifters for this model, offering a more straightforward shift experience. Mini boasts a 0-100kph acceleration time of just 6.6 seconds, showcasing the performance upgrade.
