BMW has launched the 8th Generation 5 Series in India. The new BMW 5 Series LWB is the Longest Car in its Segment. The 5 Series LWB directly competes with Mercedes-Benz Next gen E-Class.
BMW has Launched its latest flagship model, the 5 Series, in India at a price point of Rs 72.90 lakh, a mere few months following the launch of its electric counterpart, the i5. The 5 Series is now available in the Long Wheel Base (LWB) configuration, marking its debut in the Indian market. In contrast, the i5 retains its compact design, albeit with a shorter wheelbase. The G68 model, representing the eighth generation of the 5 Series LWB, is strategically positioned for the segment of luxury sedan enthusiasts who prefer chauffeur-driven vehicles. It competes with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which has been available in LWB form for an extended period.
BMW 5 Series LWB – Exterior Design
The primary focal point of discussion surrounding the latest 5 Series model is its significantly expanded dimensions, which surpass those of its predecessor and even the E-Class LWB, establishing it as the largest vehicle within its class. Indeed, measuring at 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105mm, it stands even larger than the forthcoming next-generation E-Class LWB model, which is slated for launch later this year. An intriguing aspect to note regarding the naming conventions is that BMW refers to this model as the ‘5 LWB’, whereas the extended version of the 3 Series is known as the Gran Limousine. Conversely, the 7 Series model does not receive any suffix.
BMW refers to this model as a “2.5-box design,” highlighting the distinctive flowing roofline that aims to evoke the shape of a coupé. The design incorporates strategic use of contour lines and contrast colors on the bodywork, yet these elements are insufficient to mask the prominent size of the Long Wheel Base (LWB) 5 Series. The inclusion of 18-inch wheels, given their diminutive size in comparison to the extensive dimensions of the car, detracts from their appearance, despite employing a sporty Y-spoke design.
Furthermore, the choice of narrow 225/55 R18 tires around the perimeter accentuates the significant gaps between the wheel arches, a feature that is often a concern in vehicles of this length. However, it is noted that the LWB 5 Series achieves a relatively generous ground clearance. Additionally, 19-inch wheels are available as an optional upgrade.
BMW 5 Series LWB – Interior
The latest 5 Series boasts a dual-tone interior that, upon closer comparison, is remarkably reminiscent of its predecessor, the i5, thereby lending an air of familiarity to those who are accustomed to the sophistication found in newer BMW models. As for the occupant, the vehicle is equipped with a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster and a driver-centric 14.9-inch central touchscreen infotainment system.
Standard features include a climate control system designed for four zones, luxurious leather upholstery adorned with a diamond-pattern quilting, front-seat ventilation for comfort, advanced matrix LED headlights for safety, an extensive list of sound system offerings from Bowers & Wilkins, with an impressive lineup of 18 speakers and a powerful output of 655W, and six conveniently placed USB-C ports. BMW India has also introduced a fully vegan interior option, catering to the evolving preferences of discerning buyers.
Certainly, the back of the 5 Series Long Wheel Base has been prioritized. Along with the additional leg space provided by the extended wheelbase, there’s a touchscreen integrated into the fold-down armrest for the climate controls, a rear wireless phone charger, and a spacious moonroof featuring a stationary glass that lets in plenty of light into the interior. Nonetheless, the back seats lack the ability to recline, and there are no sunshades available for the rear windows and the rear window itself.
BMW 5 Series LWB – Powertrain
The exclusive 530Li model is equipped with a powerful 258hp, 400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which benefits from a mild-hybrid assistance system of 48V. This vehicle features an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering torque exclusively to the rear wheels. According to BMW, it can achieve a 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.5 seconds, with a regulated top speed of 250kph.
BMW 5 Series LWB – Pricing
BMW India has Launched the latest BMW 5 Series LWB model in the exclusive 530Li variant. Priced at Rs 72.90 lakh, the 5 Series is approximately Rs 3 lakh more affordable than its main rival, the Mercedes E200.
